Associations

Heartland is accredited by and a member of: American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).

The AABB is an international, not-for-profit association dedicated to the advancement of science and the practice of transfusion medicine and related biological therapies. The association is committed to improving health by developing and delivering standards, accreditation and educational programs and services that optimize patient and donor care and safety. AABB membership consists of approximately 1,800 institutions and 8,000 individuals, including physicians, scientists, administrators, medical technologists, nurses, researchers, blood donor recruiters and public relations personnel. Members are located in all 50 states and 80 countries.

Heartland is also a founding member of America's Blood Centers and the Blood Centers of America (BCA/hemerica).

America's Blood Centers is North America's largest network of non-profit, community blood centers. ABC members subscribe to a community-based blood banking philosophy. That means community donors know that the blood they give stays in that community first -- helping family members, friends and neighbors. Any excess supply is shared with other communities who need it most. ABC’s members represent 76 community-based blood centers around the U.S. and Canada. America's Blood Centers' members collected more than 7.5 million units of blood in 2002.

BCA/hemerica is actually two companies, Blood Centers of America, Inc., and hemerica, inc. BCA is a cooperative of community blood centers from across the U.S. and hemerica is a wholly-owned subsidiary which extends BCA services to additional community blood centers which are not members of the cooperative. BCA/hemerica's business focus is on improving the operations and business activities of the blood centers associated with it.
